Front of Store owner Philip Downer has been a company director for over 20 years, serving on the boards of UK and US retailers: multinationals, UK plc’s, private equity, and family-owned businesses.
Philip offers pragmatic, considered and actionable advice. As a former CEO, he has a clear understanding of every element of a retail business.
He is interested in:
- Board membership of retail, publishing or media businesses:
- Business start-ups
- Advisory boards
- Charitable and educational organisations
Philip can also offer advice and consultancy support on an ad-hoc basis. At a time of massive change across the retail and publishing, he can provide market insight and strategic guidance across much of the retail (non-food, non-fashion) space.
Front of Store is also a potential investor in interesting retail opportunities.
Philip Downer was a director and Council Member of the Booksellers Association for eight years, 2002-2010. The BA is the trade organisation for book retailers large and small, from major chains and supermarkets to specialised independents. The Council advances the interests of its members in areas of trade, technology and legislation.
In 2007, Philip was Chairman of one of the UK’s most successful charitable events, World Book Day. World Book Day promotes literacy in children and adults; creates awareness of the value of reading in the wider media, and promotes Britain’s superb children’s authors and illustrators.
He has been a member of the judging panels for several British Book Trade Awards.
Since 2010, he has been a member of the Vital Kingston Academy, which seeks to engage businesses and residents in improving Kingston’s public spaces and communal activities.
In September 2011, he joined the Publishing Advisory Board at Kingston University.
